More Boys than Girls in Specialised High Schools

According to a report from The New York Times, the admission count of girls into specialised high schools, such as Stuyvesant High School, has been observed to be frequently lower than that of boys. Statistically, the gender composition in these schools is 60 per cent for boys. In addition, girls haven't performed as well as boys in standardised tests like the SAT, leading some to the belief that such admissions tests are less favourable for one gender than the other.

This has caused concern amongst academics, who worry that gender imbalance in such schools would further exclude girls in fields pertaining to Science and Maths. Regardless, there are opponents to this angle who claim that girls do perform as well as boys in such specialised tests, and some who suggest that it is a matter of subject preferences.
