First Paperless Library to Open This Summer
A project by the name of Bibliotech will see the opening of the world's first paperless public library in Bexar County, Texas. The library will have 100 e-readers on loan, and dozens of screens for users to use. Bibliotech will also allow users to access 10,000 digital titles from their homes.
Although San Antonio has many public libraries, they are typically accessible by city-dwellers; Bexar County, on the contrary, has never had a public library service before. As such, this makes Bibliotech a viable solution in the provision of e-reading materials.
Bexar County Judge Nelson Wolff sees the project as a pilot for a county-wide scheme, recognising its necessity, particularly since paperless academic libraries have already been on the rise. Nevertheless, there are arguments that physical books will remain important, as their tactility may bear significance. E-books are also not always cheap to acquire, and certain types of books do not work well with e-readers.
