Call for Polytechnics to be Brought Back to England
A report commissioned by the Institute of Policy Research called for the reintroduction of polytechnics in England. In the 1960s, polytechnics were set up to ensure working class communities could benefit from the expansion of higher education. But by 1992, the government turned polytechnics into universities because of changes to the labour market.
Seen as institutions where more vocational-oriented qualifications are offered, the revival of polytechnics will give vocational learning a boost, especially to the manufacturing, engineering and pharmaceutical industries.
