Is China Using Education to Assert Soft Power?
An article from Asian Correspondent recently questioned whether a massive joint academic collaboration between Zhejiang University and Imperial College London - an effort that would help both parties greatly benefit both parties mutually - was yet another sign of China's pursuit of soft power to expand its influence, citing other preceding noteworthy cases too like Beijing's Tsinghua University's 19 joint master programmes with other institutions across the globe.
According to University of Hong Kong's Professor Rui Yang, China is actively trying to extend its educational outreach, although from the government's point of view, the soft power projection associated with these initiatives is not enough. It is unclear at this point too who will stand to gain more, although both sides are very much in favour of the Zhejiang University-Imperial College London collaboration.
